Everybody knows UFeela is a new body of work by Johannesburg based artist Turia Magadlela featuring permutations of stretched pantyhose compositions. These abstract works also function as visual dialogues surrounding a fictitious character called Feela (whose name is derived from “to feel”, a popular shortened women’s name in Zulu, and a township skipping game involving stretched pantyhose).
“Feela is me, my aunt, my mom, my grandmother, my daughter. Feela is woman, Feela can be from anywhere, any race… we all know her but she is a character we choose to ignore. Feela is all woman and my paintings track the painfully happy, scary journey of a woman such as her and I through the ages.”
