Pedro Wirz

Pedro Wirz grew up in Pindamonhangaba, a small city 160 kilometers northeast of the capital. Wirz’s oeuvre is predominantly sculptural or installation-based, and refers to ideas around community, folklore and storytelling that are often informed by the histories – both actual and mythical – of the Paraíba Valley region in Brazil where he grew up. Wirz’s interest in the folklores of Brazil stems from their use of fear, awe and mystery to explain those aspects of the natural world that cannot be answered by scientific knowledge. A crucial facet of Wirz’s practice is his atavistic approach to production through human labour, particularly characterised by a process of collaboration.

Recent solo exhibitions include Breastfed Tadpole (Kai Matsumiya Gallery, New York, 2018); Fábula, Frisson, Melancolia (Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo, 2017); Dobrar de Espinho, Anzol (Murias Centeno Gallery, Porto, 2017); and The Horse Who Drunk Beer (Kai Matsumiya Gallery, New York, 2016). His work has also been presented at the Tinguely Museum (2016), CCS Bard Hessel Museum of Art (2015), Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2013), Dortmunder Kunstverein (2013), Palais de Tokyo (2013), and Kunsthalle Basel (2011). Parallel to his artistic production, Wirz has participated in several curatorial projects, taking place in venues as diverse as his living room (Wirzhaus, 2007, in collaboration with Raphael Linsi and Luiz Albisser) and the Liste Art Fair (the forever ending story, started in 2009 and currently paused, in collaboration with Linsi, Tilman Schlevogt and Claudio Vogt). In 2016 he was the artist in residence at the Swiss Institute Rome, and he has recently completed a residency at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

Wirz has recently been awarded the ProHelvetia Cahier d’Artistes Prize and later this year, his work will be presented at the Kunstraum Riehen in Basel, Switzerland. Other upcoming projects include a solo exhibition at the Centre Culturel Suisse of Paris in May 2019.

Born in 1981 in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil, Wirz currently lives and works in Zürich, Switzerland.
