We are Zander Blom, Jan-Henri Booyens, Michael MacGarry and Jaco van Schalkwyk. blank projects is our home-base/office-studio for group projects and collaborations from the 1st of December 2011 to the 20th of January 2012. We’ve all been working together since as early as 2004. We were offered this show at Blank Projects, and since we’ll all be in Cape Town over the Holiday season and we don’t have a central meeting point, we figured that Blank Projects could be just that. Some days we’ll be at the beach all day. For big chunks of the time we’ll be doing Christmas and New Years stuff with family and girlfriends/ fiancés.  But we’ll also be at Blank from time to time, where we’ll be working on new AVANTCARGUARD shit, recording a new Jaco+Z-dog album, playing some shows, maybe we’ll even make a short film or two. We’ll also be inviting some collaborators and friends over. So come round to Blank if the weather is crap. Maybe we’ll be around making some new stuff. Bring your own beer. There’s coffee, tea and great food at the amazing deli next door, and if you’re looking for art, you’ll find it across the road. ALSO WE’LL HAVE A BIG CLOSING PARTY ON 19 JANUARY. BIG. HUGE.It’s a very rare and special occasion when we all get to hang out together in the same city for an extended period of time. Let’s pray that nobody get’s arrested or end up in jail.

AVANT CAR GUARD is a three member South African visual art collective, who exhibit, practice and author as a singular artist. They have produced three publications on their work, titled Volume I, Volume II and Volume III respectively, and have exhibited at a national and international level for several years. Their production is focused on a conceptual, self-reflexive and satirical approach to the art world – it’s markets, practitioners as well as the process of creating itself. This is manifest across multidisciplinary means; through photography, sculpture, performance, multiples, installation and painting. Our website doesn’t work  : (

JACO+Z-DOG is a 2-piece band from Johannesburg formed in 2009 by Zander Blom and Jaco van Schalkwyk. Of their first EP Die Eerste Leestelling, Lloyd Gedye of the Mail and Guardian writes: “Seventeen minutes is all it takes the reckless duo of Jaco and Z-dog to turn Afrikaans music on its
head”, listing Boring as one of his top ten South African songs of 2010. The same reviewer describes their second EP Goud Werd as “another brilliant sucker punch between the eyes”. Emansipasie their debut album, can be downloaded for free at Jacozdog.com. The book Jaco + Z-dog : Volume I, documenting their performances in small venues around rural and urban South Africa is slated for release in 2012. Just in case you’re still reading, of their unrelenting creative output, Gedye writes: “In just three years, Jaco + Z-Dog have gone from a rowdy, humorous side project of two self- confessed “art geeks” to a living, breathing rock ‘n roll machine”. True to form, a new album is slated for release before the end of the year.
