Adriaan de Villiers (Installation view)
Adriaan de Villiers presents an installation of phallic/religious tower-like forms that crowd the exhibition space. De Villiers describe his work as "an unorthodox protest against sterile, modern architecture". The individual sculptures remind of Gaudi, Hundertwasser, Russian architecture, outsider art and the erotic symbolism of Gustav Klimt. Apart from these de Villiers also draws inspiration from the South African flower kingdom and shell-forms.
Adriaan de Villiers resides in Cape Town. In 2007 he obtained a BA Fine Arts degree from the University of Stellenbosch. During the two years after graduation he participated in various exhibitions and won the best sculpture prize in the Sanlam Vuleka Art Competition in 2008. 2009 marked his acceptance for the Thami Mnyele artist-in-residence program in Amsterdam. The residence resulted in a series of sculptures exhibited in two exhibitions in Gallery 23, Amsterdam and Gallery SANAA, Utrecht. In 2010 he exhibited at Co-Op Gallery in Johannesburg, and at two group exhibitions at blank projects, "Inverting the Pyramid" and "The Menippean Uprising. http://www.adriaandevilliers.com
