Dominique Cheminais

FOR ESMé, WITH LOVE AND SQUALOR

05/05/2010 - 29/05/2010

Dominique Cheminais. Worlds End. 2010. Oil on canvas.
550 x 750mm.

My first love is literature. I seek to create visual manifestations of my own perception of the worlds created by others. As a painter I draw inspiration from my personal response to the characters in the novels that I read. In this ongoing body of work I am looking at a specific period of literature, focusing on authors such as Jean Paul Sartre, Vladimir Nabokov, Evelyn Waugh, Aldous Huxley, W. Somerset Maugham, F.Scott Fitzgerald and Georges Bataille. For this series of paintings I have chosen J.D. Salinger. I have always felt a deep affinity with Salinger’s writing. He has remained my favorite author over the years, having read my first of his books, a collection of short stories titled For Esme with Love and Squalor at 15. Now 10 years later I have decided to make that book the focus for this, my first exhibition.

Dominique Cheminais was born in 1984 and currently lives in Cape Town.
