Deadheat. Dancer’s Daughter and Pocket Power, Durban July 2008.

Deadheat presented as a triptych, a three-part show that developed over the month of May. The gallery space became both a stage and a double for the colabborating artists' process, defined by their related but separate practices. A dead heat is a horse racing term used to refer to the rare event of two horses crossing the finishing line simultaneously.

Each part of the triptych is structured around the notion of contest, conversation and doubling. Image as painting and projection. Text as lexical and vocal (written and spoken). Space as a screen for the re-presentation of a work that exists only temporarily, outside of the gallery, a performance requiring no audience. The three parts developed alongside and in conversation with each other, as well as with blank and the city as site. However, each completed itself on its own terms, and in its own time.

In gambling, no game is dependent on the preceding one.

*Trifecta (n): a system of betting in which the bettor must pick the first three winning positions in the correct sequence, usually in horse racing. Also called a triple.
