Kakuji. Black Treasure Box. Collage. 420 x 297mm
The works shown are collages, no Photoshop, hand-made with the precision of a jeweller. The subject matter is often hard. Economic, political and sexual violence, psychological damage and sheer, unadulterated hurt are at the heart of things and are often dealt with in highly graphic ways. This is not (and is emphatically not meant to be) art that is easy to look at.
Born in Lubumbashi (DRC), raised in Brooklyn and currently based in Paris, Kakudji visited Cape Town for a month, as artist-in-residence of SPARCK. SPARCK – Space for Pan-African Research, Creation and Knowledge – is a multi-sited, network-driven project funded by the Africa Centre. It focuses on intersections between emergent urban practices and artistic expression in a wide range of media across the African world. For more info and coming venues, see SPARCK on Facebook or contact SPARCK at sparck@eternalnetwork.org
