BUOYS AND GIRLS
21/07/2006 - 04/08/2006
Artist's statement:
For the solo show at blank projects, I am constructing a landscape of fibre sculptures and 2D drawings. I am using off-cuts and rags of various fabrics. These off-cuts in various shapes are stitched together and filled with polyester fibre to transform them into 3-dimensional objects. The shapes are suggestive of the human body and organs.
On the floor, groups of tubes reminiscing trees or crosses (800 mm tall) are growing and stretching from the floor up. They are bobbing around the surface as if floating on water.
Hanging down from the ceiling are shapes of more complex feature, also stitched in fabric. These shapes are more feminine in their form.
On the walls: line drawings of profiles and recognizable shapes, with hand-embroidered areas to accentuate sections of the drawing, combining a softness of yarn with bold lines of permanent markers.
The gallery space indicates a hiding place or inner body, with organ-like objects or sea-like creatures.
I have titled the exhibition ‘Buoys and Girls’. The show focuses on playfulness and could suggest a hiding place for children to play and hide, as below the sea level, a forest or within.
