Christopher Slack

Artist’s statement:
This work was inspired by the “Abu Ghraib” incident.
I conceived a photoshoot based loosely on these press images. This provided the basis for paintings and a series of screen prints.
I am interested in the individual human response to circumstances of extreme tension.
I am exploring the relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed: The cruelty, degradation, de-humanization and psycho-sexual dynamics. Being compelled to confront the horrors of the world –in Iraq or here at home- is a process that runs parallel with my own inner struggle: dealing with my own negative tendencies, repressed feelings, petty jealousies, etc. It is merely a difference in scale.
Christopher Slack was born in 1970 in Cape Town, where he is currently residing. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions around South Africa and has had three solo shows. His work is in private collections both locally and abroad. He works in painting, printmaking and mixed media. His work can be described as an ironic commentary on contemporary life.
